What Are Smartphones?

The line between cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) has blurred so much that you no longer need to sacrifice performance when you opt for an all-in-one device. A combined PDA and cell phone -- or "smartphone" -- is not much bigger than the average cell phone.

Not everyone needs one, but smartphones are ideal for people who are tired of carrying two separate apparatuses and find themselves on the road wanting convenient ways to:

Consider how you anticipate using your phone and ask yourself:

Some smartphone models can retail for up to $600, but careful shoppers can find web sites that give you steep discounts, or even free phones, when you order new service.

Smartphones often go by other names like PDA phones or personal information managers (PIMs). Popular smartphones include various models of PalmOne Treo and BlackBerry phones.

My HP Ipaq I've had for 1-1/2 Yrs. After many warranty exchanges I can suggest that Smartphones need a lot of memory and faster chips to operate todays software. My current carrier, T-Mbl, has not upgraded to Windows 2005 and probably won't as T-Mbl doesn't support the iPAQ any longer. My daughter's Treo 600 isn't any better; not a Windows enviroment. T-Mbl pushes BlKcBry and they're having trouble. I rather stick with HP USA.
